Parkrun is a free community event that you can take part in that encourages you to run, jog, or even walk around a set 5km route on a Saturday morning.

Starting with Rob Borthwick in 2004, Parkrun operates entirely with volunteers who work hard to make sure that the conditions are safe, that people know where they’re going, and that they have fun!

Anyone who wants to can volunteer for their local parkrun as long as they have a free hour at the weekends and are willing to encourage people positively!

Anyone of any age and all running abilities is encouraged to participate. If you have any aspiring young runners you may also have a separate junior Parkrun in your area. This is a shorter 2km run for children ages 4-14 to run independently or with their friends and families on Sunday mornings.

There is no time limit for anyone wanting to complete the course, and in Parkrun there is no such thing as coming last as the last person in will always be the tailwalker who with the marshalls makes sure everyone finishes safely.

By registering online you can get a barcode to scan that will tell you your time, so you can beat your own personal record.

David Benstead, one of the volunteers at Erskine Waterfront Parkrun, has said: “I am a run director.”

“My favourite part of Parkrun is the social aspect.  I like meeting people from all different walks of life who you might not meet otherwise.”

“I volunteer because Parkrun needs volunteers to happen and it is very rewarding to be part of. It's great to see people's smiling faces on a Saturday morning!”

The community surrounding Parkrun is extremely welcoming and encouraging to anyone wanting to join, and with 1,306 official Parkrun events established in the country, you’re sure to find one near you to go and enjoy.
