Glasses were raised in celebration last week when a Drumchapel gran reached her 100th birthday milestone.

Elizabeth Kinnear – known to all as Cissie – was the toast of her family and friends who gathered to offer their best wishes.

And Cissie toasted herself with a sherry as the celebration, held in Balquhidder House care home in Alexandria, got under way.

Daughter Margaret Fox told the Post: “It was a lovely occasion and mum enjoyed herself thoroughly.”

A special guest was Councillor Karen Conaghan, deputy provost of West Dunbartonshire, who congratulated Cissie on reaching such a significant, 100-year milestone and wished her continuing good health and many more birthdays to come.

Cllr Conaghan said: “It was an honour to be there, and I read her the message of congratulations from the Queen.

When she saw the Queen’s picture, she quipped ‘I’ve got nice hats as well.’ She’s a real character.”

Cissie, who was born in Possilpark, and her late husband Tommy, from Springburn, met at a dance in Glasgow’s famous Green’s Playhouse.

Cissie was a trainee bookbinder prior to the war and worked in munitions at the outbreak of hostilities, while Tommy was in the Royal Engineers.

They married in Rockvilla Church of Scotland in Possilpark in 1945 and Cissie worked as a cleaner in Blythswood Square.

The family later moved to Drumchapel where Cissie became well known as a home help.

In total, she has been a Drumchapel resident for 60 years. Tommy passed away in the early 1970s.

Cissie has another daughter, Jean, a son Thomas and four grandchildren – Michael, Cameron, Fraser and Jenny, who is expecting Cissie’s first great grandchild.

Cissie also has a sister, Charlotte, 96, in Birmingham.

Margaret added: “She has been a wonderful mum to us all.”
