CLYDEBANK’S hopes of promotion have ended following with a 1-1 draw with Rutherglen Glencairn last Wednesday evening.

Nicky Little’s 21st goal of the season, which equalled Darian MacKinnon’s total for the club in a season, wasn’t enough as Clydebank fell at the final hurdle.

Promotion rivals Cumnock and Kilwinning have since taken maximum points, meaning Bankies will finish fourth and cannot now finish in the play-off place.

Bankies boss Budgie McGhie made two changes to the side that comfortably beat Cumnock, with Alan Vezza and Hashim Cole returning to the starting line-up in place of Robbie Halliday and Andy Paterson respectively.

An excellent crowd in excess of 700 gathered at Holm Park to watch the game, in which neither side threatened in the opening 10 minutes.

In front of an excellent crowd in excess of 700 at Holm Park, Bankies almost broke the deadlock after 20 minutes. Lone striker Stevie Young’s sweetly struck effort brought out a smart stop from Hutchison. as Bankies tried to get a grip on the game.

Midway through the first half however, the visitors to took the lead. Cullen flicked the ball into the bath of Ryan Bennett, who held off Calum Gow as he slipped the ball under Josh Lumsden to make it 1-0.at his near post to register his first competitive goal for the Glens.

Glencairn took heart from taking the lead and threatened again soon after. Bachelor waltzed through the Bankies midfield and drove at the defence, with Lumsden on hand to gathering the resulting shot.

Bankies regrouped at the break and were level three minutes after the restart. Cutting inside, Mark Burbidge’s pass found Little inside the area, his deflected shot gave Hutchison no chance. In the process, Little became the joint top goalscorer in the junior era.

McGhie’s men were buoyed byt from grabbing the equaliser and found themselves on top. The Glens backline had no match for Burbidge’s pace, with the tricky winger continually evading challenges much to the Holm Park crowd’s delight.

With 10 minutes remaining, Bankies were agonisingly close to grabbing a late winner. From Hashim Cole’s long free-kick, the ball worked its way to the edge of the area where Burbidge unleashed a powerful goal-bound volley, with the ball deflecting off Glens defender Tony Fraser and wide for a corner.

The Glens then saw out the game as Bankies promotion dream ended.

While the draw saw Bankies extend their unbeaten run to ten matches, it did mean they ultimately fell just short and will compete in the Super League First Division once again next term.
