OLD Kilpatrick wrestler Gareth Jones admitted he is excited by the prospect of wrestling in front of a home crowd at next month’s Commonwealth Games.

The 20-year-old was selected in February to be part of the 14 strong Scotland wrestling team at this year’s Games after battling back from a knee injury that almost shattered his Commonwealth dream.

He said: “I’m never going to get this opportunity again of a home Games and just to have the crowd there cherring everyone one — it’s huge.

“The SECC is usually used for boxing and gigs and generally produces a really good atmosphere.

“I think it is really important that wrestling is represented in the Commonwealth Games because it doesn’t get nearly enough exposure in this country so hopefully by getting that exposure it will help wrestling grow and develop as a sport and get more people involved.” Jones believes that the fans will enjoy the spectacle, highlighting the excitement and unpredicability of the sport as one reason to get along and watch.

He added: “Anything can happen in wrestling — you could be 7-0 up and in the next second you could be flat on your back.

“There could only be a couple of seconds to go with one point in it and you could win or lose it depending how those couple of seconds go.”
