JORDAN Shelvey may have only made the step up to the juniors during the summer — but the 21-year-old has already set his targets high in his debut season.

Budgie McGhie snapped up Shelvey from local amateur side Dumbarton Harp, before handing the youngster his debut in the Central League Cup final win over Cumbernauld United at the end of last season.

With the departure Ross McPherson at the end of last season, Shelvey has been drafted in to fill the number nine slot left by his prolific predecessor, and admitted to SportScene he was surprised to be thrown in at the deep end.

He said: “I think my first two competitive games this year were against Glenafton and Irvine Meadow — I mean, they don’t get any harder than that.

“It has been a steep learning curve and I have had a bit of rough treatment from the defenders that I have come across but it is all part of the game.

“When I first joined I can honestly say I never in my wildest dreams imagined I would be starting pretty much every week.

“I thought my involvement would be a bit more limited but that isn’t to say I’m not happy —I’m delighted to be playing every week.” A stuttering start to the season sees Clydebank sit second bottom of the table with only a point on the board. It had been hoped Saturday’s Scottish Cup tie with Colony Park would provide some light relief for the Bankies but a 0-0 draw means they welcome Colony to Holm Park in this weekend’s replay.

Shelvey believes confidence will be high heading into the match and insisted Clydebank should have been heading down the road on Saturday evening with their name already in the hat for the next round.

He added: “We played well on Saturday and dominated from start to finish.

“But to be fair to Colony Park they showed a lot of heart and held on their lives and if it wasn’t for Robert Hamilton then they could have sneaked a win.

“This is the time to get the ball rolling, obviously we haven’t had the best of starts to the season so it is crucial for us to kick-start this Saturday.

“We strive to have a good home record and this is our chance,”
