CLYDEBANK captain Austin McCann believes the Bankies have what it takes to get their hands on more silverware this season.

McCann tasted his first piece of success in the colours of his hometown club when they defeated Pollok in the final of the Sectional League Cup in September and the defender says Budgie McGhie’s men should use the memories of the day as motivation to progress past Shotts Bon Accord in the Central League Cup on Saturday.

McCann told Sportscene: “It’s great for a side like us to get a good run in the cup, the Sectional League Cup final was a fantastic day out and it would be nice to grab some more silverware.

“It’s great to get another shot. The boys were all disappointed after falling out the West of Scotland cup to Auchinleck Talbot so they are desperate to get back to business in the cups and get another good run going.

“Shotts will be a difficult match but I believe we have what it takes to get far.

“We try to win every competition that we are in and it would be great to have another day out and cup final to look forward to. It was brilliant to get the cup against Pollok and we can hopefully use it as motivation for this tournament.” In his first season in the Junior ranks after enjoying a lengthy career at the likes of Hearts, Airdrie and Dunfermline, McCann has had a successful campaign with Clydebank aiming for a place in the top two but he admits the standard hasn’t taken him by surprise in his first season of junior football.

He said: “It’s been an enjoyable season and the support we have had throughout has been second to none.

“The fans have always been great and get behind the team week in week out and it can be a huge lift.

“The standard has been what I expected to be honest. We have lost a few players during the season including a couple of internationalists so it has been difficult at times but we have coped well.

“The squad has some good quality in it which is why we are so competitive in each competition.”
