CLYDEBANK captain Phil Barclay has backed wide man Jordan Shelvey to go from strength to strength this season after he netted a crucial goal in Bankies’ Scottish Cup win on Saturday.

The Bankies travelled to Forfar West End in the second round of the cup, with the scores level after 66 minutes Shelvey broke the deadlock with a header.

Now in his second season at the club, Shelvey has featured heavily in Budgie McGhie’s side this season despite an influx of attacking players in the summer. And Barclay is convinced he can be a key player for Clydebank this season.

He said: “Jordan was good last season to a certain extent. His confidence has been the biggest factor for him this season. He has settled in well to the formation the gaffer has chosen this year.

“He’s getting joy from it. The gaffer said to him yesterday get yourself turned and go at players because that is what he is good at. In the second half he got his rewards for getting up to support.

“Jordan can be a big player for us this season.” Barclay was subbed in the second half after picking up an injury at the start of the game, he will see the physio this week and hopes to be fit for Saturday’s league clash with Kilwinning Rangers at Holm Park.

The midfielder admitted he is relieved to be in the hat for the next round of the Scottish Cup after an impressive first half display from Forfar West End on Saturday.

He added: ”They came at us in the first half and were definitely the better team. We took a while to settle in and probably should’ve had a penalty which would’ve changed the game.

“To be fair we were happy enough with 0-0 at half-time. In the second half we were better. In these cup games you go a bit into the unknown so it’s about finding a way to get a result.”
