A SENIOR police officer has made a fresh appeal for witnesses who could help see murderer Alexander Pacteau retried for attempted rape.

The 21-year-old was found guilty of murdering Irish Student Karen Buckley and trying to dispose of her body in April.

The former Clydebank furniture store worker and Drumchapel resident was cleared of a previous sex attack on a 24-year-old in Glasgow's Baliol Lane in November 2011, but could face a retrial.

Pacteau denied the attempted rape and was cleared by a majority verdict at Paisley Sheriff Court in 2013, but could be prosecuted using double jeopardy laws.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Burton appeared in Irish station TV3's Disclosure documentary last night and made the appeal for any witnesses to come forward.

He said:"There is still an opportunity for some time in future that that may end up back in court.

"We spoke to the witnesses who were involved in that case and we explored it ourselves but there may be other witnesses out there who are watching this who maybe saw something take place that night who have yet to contact the police.

"If you are one of those people I would love to hear from you."
