Clydebank pair Florence and Jim McLaughlin tied the knot on February 11, 1962, at St Joseph’s Church in Milngavie.

They marked 50 golden of years of marriage by exchanging wedding vows once again in a special ceremony at St Eunan’s Church in Drumry.

The special occasion was shared with family and friends, and was followed by a party in St Eunan’s Church Hall.

And the generous couple, both aged 75, raised £1,060 for St Margaret’s Hospice by requesting donations to the Clydebank charity instead of gifts.

Florence told the Post: “We arranged the ceremony ourselves because back in those days we weren’t able to have a big fancy wedding.

“We had an amazing day.” Jim added: “It’s unbelievable, 50 years down the line, to be married. It’s fabulous.

“We’ve two daughters, two sons, and 11 grandkids, so we’ve never run out of things to do.” The proud grandfather revealed that his big day did not get off to the best start 50 years ago.

Florence arrived half-an-hour late — leaving Jim sweating at the altar a bit longer than he expected.

Florence is originally from Bearsden, and Jim from Clydebank, but the pair have lived in the area most of their lives and currently stay in Radnor Park.

Jim worked at John Brown’s Shipyards but 40 years ago left and worked as a handyman at St Andrew’s College, which is now Bearsden Academy.

Florence worked in a box factory in Milngavie before getting married and went on to serve as an auxiliary nurse at Yorkhill Sick Kids Hospital.

Both are happily retired and enjoy spending time with their family.

Jim told the Post: “I’m looking for the next anniversary. We’ve got a big family so we’re always kept on the go.

“One of the best memories over the years has to be when my daughter was born. It was an incredible, an amazing occasion and my mother was over the moon because it was three boys she had.” Florence said: “It was great to renew our vows. The provost was here to help us celebrate. He gave us flowers and a bottle of whisky.

“Our family have given us cash to go on holiday too. We’re not sure where to go but Jim is eyeing up a South American cruise.”
