The bus stop, which sits directly outside Pinewood Square sheltered housing complex in Drumchapel, was recently taken away by Scottish Partnership for Transport (SPT).

SPT bosses insist this is because pick-ups there are “causing delays”.

Some OAPs living in Pinewood Square’s 34 flats have trouble reaching the other bus stop and have been left feeling isolated.

Drumchapel councillor Malcolm Balfour is meeting with Scottish Partnership for Transport bosses and hopes to convince them to restore the bus stop.

He said: “As a former bus driver, I think it’s horrendous that the SPT have taken away this stop — but it’s happening all over the city. I’m in talks at the moment with SPT — I’m going to be having a sit down with them about this to see if we can alleviate the problem.” The stop was situated at the turn-off for Pinewood Square from the east side of Kinfauns Drive in Drumchapel.

Residents must now walk around 300 metres to the next stop across Northmuir Road.

Beatrice Tate and neighbour May Cassidy, both aged 76, say residents, especially the older ones, relied on the close proximity of their bus stop.

Beatrice said: “I don’t understand why, of all the bus stops to take away, they chose to remove the one frequented by the elderly people here.

“It makes sense that some bus stops may have to go but there are other stops up the road that are surrounded by nothing bus grassy areas.

“I hope they can consider putting it back — it’s so vital for people living here if they want to go out and about, and get into town.” Mrs Cassidy added: “It’s important at this time of year with how windy, rainy and icy it can be — not all of the older ones can get down there easily.

“I, myself, was almost knocked down by a van as I tried to cross Northmuir Road. It was terrifying and I’m not trying it again.” A SPT spokeswoman said: “We are working with Glasgow City Council to upgrade bus stops on Kinfauns Drive which will include higher kerbs and clearer road markings to improve accessibility for bus passengers.

“The improvement works also included the consideration of the number of stops along that road as bus operators have told us that two are so close together.

“Stops on Kinfauns Drive before Northmuir Road and before Merryton Road — they are causing delays to services. As a result those stops have been removed.”
