Sean Kelly demanded cash from staff at Adriano’s on Kilbowie Road as customers queued for their food on May 23.

The 29-year-old — who was armed with a screwdriver — told workers: “This is a robbery. I am being f****** serious. I need the money.” He also threatened to jump over the counter as a pregnant woman working in the chippie stood serving customers.

But brave workers refused to hand over cash — and Kelly then got battered by two delivery drivers.

Last week Adriano’s manager, Lorenzo Iafrate, 47, told the Post: “We’ve been robbed twice before but this situation was a joke.

“It was just before 7pm, there were customers in the shop and this guy walks in wearing a balaclava but it was a ripped balaclava. The guy was like, ‘this is a robbery’ but we just kind of laughed and nobody took him seriously.

“He looked drunk, he was staggering all over the place that’s how bad it was.

“It took a couple of minutes to realise that he was being serious.

“There were ladies working and he said, ‘excuse me ladies, move away from the counter, this is a robbery’.

“As soon as it clicked that he was being serious I looked at one of the girls in the back and said phone 999.

“The guy said, ‘I need the money’ and one of the girls replied ‘so does everybody — get a job’.

“He started getting more angry and he was looking like how he was going to jump the counter but he wasn’t in any state to get over the counter. If he did he would have fallen.

“While this was happening I knew that within a couple of minutes the police would be up here so we tried to stall him.” At that point one of the delivery drivers slipped outside and hatched a plan with another driver who had just arrived.

Lorenzo added: “He said to the other driver, ‘that guy’s trying to rob the shop — what are we going to do about it?’ Then they decided they were going to jump on top of him and pin him down.

“One of the delivery drivers jumped on the back of him and tried to get him down and the other grabbed his legs. He still had the screwdriver in his hand and so the boy helping ran round and took it out of his hand and within 20 seconds the police were here.” Kelly is now facing a jail-term after he pled guilty to an attempted robbery charge at the High Court in Glasgow last week.

The court heard how Kelly later told officers: “I did not assault anyone. Everything else is fine.” He also admitted to breaching a curfew after initially being granted bail by a sheriff when he was first charged with carrying out the raid and told to remain at a property in Whin Street, Parkhall, between 7pm and 7am each night.

However, when police turned up at the address on August 20 this year he was not there.

Kelly was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced on October 14 at the High Court in Edinburgh.

VOTERS are being urged to avoid peak times to minimise queues at polling stations on Thursday.

With a record number of people registered to vote in this week’s independence referendum residents polling stations are expected to be extremely busy around 8am and between 5pm and 7pm.

Chief Counting Officer Mary Pitcaithly called on voters to avoid the busiest times of the day if they can.

She said: “People who are voting at a polling place should think about what time they are going to vote. Polling places are busiest during the early morning and in the evening as people vote on their way to and from work.

“If you are able to avoid these times, I would encourage you to do so to ensure everyone can vote without having to queue for any length of time.

“I want everyone’s vote to count. It’s vital that everyone takes great care when completing their ballot paper. Mistakes mean that a ballot paper may not be counted.

“The safest way to ensure your vote counts is to only put one ‘X’ in the box beside the answer you want to choose.” Polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm.
