The community facility is one of 200 libraries across the UK handing out copies of Diary of a Wimpy Kid to youngsters.

The ‘Just Read’ drive is run in partnership with ITV’s Good Morning Britain to encourage children to share a love of reading. The campaign also encourages parents and carers to spend 10 minutes reading with their children every day.

Supported by national charity The Reading Agency and children’s publisher Puffin, the campaign aims to support parents and teachers in getting all 11-year-olds to read well by 2025.

This comes after a recent study revealed that hundreds of thousands of kids are leaving school without adequate reading skills — and that one in seven children aged 8-11 years do not own a book.

Millions of children have turned to reading because of the award-winning Diary of a Wimpy Kid book. Author Jeff Kinney’s work is perfect for turning reluctant readers on to books, with 50 per cent words and 50 per cent cartoons.

Frank McNiff, Faifley’s community library co-ordinator, said: ”This is an exciting opportunity for all children in Faifley to have the chance to receive a copy of such a popular title like Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The giveaway by the Just Read campaign will help greatly to encourage reading amongst our young people and with the added bonus of opening the library longer for this unique event and holding fun, exciting games and activities for our young people.

“This should be a great day for our young people and for the promotion of reading and libraries.” Faifley Library is located within Edinbarnet Campus, Craigpark Street. The books will be given away between 2pm and 5pm. First come, first served.
