A convicted sex offender has resigned as a councillor for Clydebank.

Craig Edward, 34, formally resigned as a councillor from West Dunbartonshire Council on Friday evening a month after pleading guilty to having hundreds of indecent images of children.

His Twitter account changed his description to "former councillor". And his name has been removed from the council's website under elected members.

A by-election is expected to be called for the Clydebank Central ward in due course.

He was elected as a Labour councillor in May 2022 but was kicked out of the party when charged in September that year and has been sitting as an independent since.

In February he pleaded guilty to possession of indecent images of children, to being involved in the making of those images and to distributing images.

He did not reply when confronted outside court and asked if he would resign.

Edward was put on the sex offenders register in the interim but continued to email and Tweet as a councillor.

A motion to council later this month called for him to resign. There was no legislation to force him to resign or automatic termination of his position. He would only have been removed if he had been jailed.

He moved to England after being charged but has continued as a councillor for Clydebank ever since.

A council spokesperson said: "We can confirm Councillor Craig Edward has resigned from his position with immediate effect."
