Glasgow City Council doesn’t hold information about how many children were refused nursery places because of a lack of space.
Education convener and Garscadden/Scotstounhill councillor Chris Cunningham made the admission at a meeting of the full council on Thursday.
He was questioned by Labour member Dr Soryia Siddique over the number of parents who failed to get their kids into their preferred nurseries.
But Mr Cunningham said: “My advice is that we do not hold or retain that data. We may regard that as something that’s lacking.
“One of the difficulties we have is a lack of detailed information both of the demand and of the income data that we have in that sector.
“I’m absolutely committed to ensuring that in moving forward we’re able to hold, retain and analyse data in terms of the levels of demand.
“I do think we need more and better information so we can properly plan.”
But Green member Dr Martin Bartos said: “In his answer he indicated that the council doesn’t hold the data.
“But I’m assuming that we know how many parents apply for spaces and how many spaces we have.”
