CLYDEBANK’S Linnvale Primary School has been awarded Eco-Schools Green Flag status for the third successive time, writes Paul Rodger.

The award was confirmed on January 18 for the pupils’ work towards reaching sustainable development goals and raising awareness of environmental issues.

Activities the pupils have been involved in include growing their own fresh fruits and vegetables in the school’s purpose built polytunnel, recycling and litter picking in the local community.

Pupils also learn about global educational awareness.

The school sponsors a former street child from Uganda who is now in education and helps provide funds for his school through fundraising initiatives.

Commenting on the achievement, head teacher Lindsay Thomas said: “We’re delighted because one of our four capacities we’re supposed to instil in the children is to become responsible citizens.

“It’s our way of making a positive change in showing the children they can have a huge impact on the world with their little changes.”

Carol Guthrie, Eco-Schools committee coordinator at Linnvale Primary, said: “We organise a two-year rolling plan.

“Some schools are losing [Green Flags] now. We get assessed every two years for it, so we’ve done well to hold on to it.

“I’m delighted that they’ve managed to keep the flag.

“Food and the environment, water, and litter were our three topics we worked on for the past two years.

“We’re delighted, the children were delighted and it’s a huge achievement for the school.”
