THE two people who died in the devastating fire which swept through Loch Lomond's luxury Cameron House hotel have been named as London couple.

The pair, who are believed to have been from London, are Richard Dyson and Simon Midgley, according to national media reports.

Police have not yet confirmed the identities of the pair - one of whom was pronounced dead at the scene while the other died in RAH in Paisley - but relatives have posted tributes on social media. .

Police and fire teams are searching for clues at the fire-ravaged hotel in the hope of establishing what caused the blaze early on Monday morning.

As the investigations got under way, dramatic accounts emerged of how guests fled when the alarm was raised around 6.40am.

A newly married couple with a baby trapped in the burning building pleaded to be rescued by firefighters before they were eventually led to safety.

Crews had to smash their way through a window to free the family, with the child being carried down a ladder by a firefighter.

They were taken to hospital in Glasgow and discharged later in the day.

Another guest who was staying with her husband and family at the hotel said that at first they thought it was a false alarm because, although the alarms sounded, they couldn't smell any smoke.

But they heard staff screaming there was a fire so they grabbed their children and ran.

Around 200 people, many in bathrobes, evacuated from the hotel and spilled out into the grounds.

At the height of the blaze, more than 40 firefighters and 12 appliances were mobilised to the scene.

Firefighters worked in difficult conditions while wearing breathing apparatus and used high powered hoses to tackle the flames.

In a statement today on its website, Cameron House said it would remain closed to arriving guests for at least the next 72 hours.

It added: “We would ask all guests and customers to remain patient as we work with the emergency services to establish the extent of the damage and ascertain when we will be able to re-open.

“More information will follow in due course.”

Andy Rodger, resort director at the five-star hotel, said: “Tragically, the authorities have confirmed two fatalities from the fire. In addition, three individuals were transported to the local hospital, but have since been discharged.

“The safety and wellbeing of our guests, employees and neighbours is our first priority and our deepest condolences are with the families of those affected.

“We are working closely with the authorities to determine the cause of the fire and to provide support to our guests and families of those affected.”
