Education chiefs in West Dunbartonshire are revealing the impact of projects to close the poverty-related attainment gap to national inspectors this week.

The council has received funding from the Scottish Government for improving attainment, and are the first in the country to have the chance to demonstrate the results to Education Scotland.

The inspection, which was due to begin on Monday, will see how the council is using the funding to improve learning and close the poverty-related gap, with council officials being asked for evidence for results on the effectiveness of their plans.

As part of national efforts to improve attainment, West Dunbartonshire Council has been given £6.8million from the Scottish Government Attainment Challenge, as well as £17m from the Pupil Equity Fund to help young people from deprived backgrounds.

Councillor Karen Conaghan, convener of educational services, said: “No child’s future should be limited due to poverty and as a council we are working hard to raise attainment and ensure all of our young people can attain and achieve.”
