WEST College Scotland goes smoke free from tomorrow, they have announced.

Smoking - including e-cigarettes - will be banned from the entire campus from August 1, not just indoors, after receiving complaints from non-smokers and a litter problem outwith designated smoking areas.

Smoking shelters will be removed, said the college, and there will be workshops provided to help people quit smoking. A Stop Smoking Challenge app, which has been developed by NHS Scotland, will also be launched.

Guidance issued to students and staff states: "Smoke-free refers to anywhere inside the college and anywhere outside on campus grounds. To be clear, any smokers must move to outwith the college boundaries on to public space if wanting to smoke.

"We do not want to push smokers into the communities we serve without first helping facilitate a change in lifestyle. However, should anyone choose to continue smoking, we would emphasise that we appreciate their co-operation in showing respect for those neighbours who surround many of our campus buildings."

In a statement, the college said staff who see people smoking in the college are being encouraged to "politely approach" them and advise them of the changes.

They added: "Failure to adhere to the new approach to smoking falls under the Student conduct policy/staff policy."

The decision to introduce a complete ban was made unanimously by a working group set up by the college's health and safety committee and backed by management. The group included staff and students, smokers and non-smokers.

Any local residents around the college with queries or concerns are invited to contact WCS on info@wcs.ac.uk.
