THE Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce says it hopes businesses in the area will be boosted by news Scotland’s economy is performing well.

The State of the Economy Report, presented by Scottish Government chief economist Dr Gary Gillespie, showed growth of around one per cent is projected in 2017 and 2018.

According to the findings business sentiment has also improved, particularly in the manufacturing sector, though Brexit continues to create uncertainty.

Damon Scott, chief executive of the chamber of commerce, said: “It is always encouraging to hear positive reports of Scottish economic performance and we hope Dunbartonshire businesses will be buoyed by this.

"On a national level we do however need to be mindful of some unpredictable times ahead in light of the general election result and the Brexit fallout.

"We urge the Scottish and UK Governments to co-operate closely and the chamber network stands ready to work constructively with politicians, decision-makers, partners and businesses to ensure a future landscape that supports business and creates opportunities to maximise growth, jobs and exports.”

Unemployment has fallen over the past year, and Scotland’s labour market continues to be the most attractive part of the UK, outside London, for foreign direct investment Clydebank’s MSP Gil Paterson said: “This report proves Scotland is just as capable as the rest of the UK, if not more capable, when you exclude London.

“Outside London, Scotland is the area to attract the most foreign investment which is undeniably a great achievement for the government here. Looking ahead, we must see an increase in economic growth, but I am all too aware of the effects Brexit presents.”
