A CLUBBER who decided to drive home after drinking at a Clydebank nightspot was stopped by police just yards from the scene.

Pershawa Jalal was banned from driving and handed a community payback order after he admitted three motoring offences.

The Iraqi national appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Friday for sentencing after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing to drink-driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

Jalal, 27, had committed the offences while on bail which was granted on the April 10 2017 from Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Scott Simpson, the fiscal depute, said Jalal had left the Club Mango nightclub at 3.05am on May 21, when fast-acting security guards, worried he may attempt to drive a vehicle, called the police.

After leaving the nightclub, on Dumbarton Road, Jalal, of Kirkton Avenue, Knightswood, got into a car and drove about 100 yards before he was stopped by police. He was found to have 51 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 22.

Jalal’s defence solicitor, Phil Lafferty, said: “It had not been his intention to drive home but he succumbed to temptation.

“He went to the car to retrieve his jacket and then decided to try to drive, given he lives nearby.”

Mr Lafferty said Jalal has an outstanding application for permanent residency with the UK immigration office, meaning he is not entitled to work, claim benefits or hold a driving licence.

Mr Lafferty told the court his client, who is married to a UK national, did not have the money to pay a financial penalty and it would, therefore, be left to his wife to pay any fine.

Sheriff John Hamilton told Jalal: “Your circumstances are a bit different being unable to earn any benefits therefore I will impose a community payback order of 60 hours of unpaid work which you will complete within a six month period.”

Jalal was handed a 12-month ban for the drink-driving offence.
