A NEW hole has opened up in a major Clydebank road in the latest misery for drivers.

Dumbarton Road at Cable Depot Road has been closed in both directions for "safety of road users" after work began earlier today to repair the road.

The road began to dip by several inches yesterday morning and the Post alerted West Dunbartonshire Council officials to the problem.

By Monday afternoon, a hole had opened up and a lane closed off to traffic, with temporary lights set up in time for this morning's commuters.

The hole is on the site of Scottish Water work just months ago that saw weeks of disruption and diversions for Cable Depot Road.

Council officials insisted this morning work would be carried out as soon as possible.

Scottish Water said a burst on a 9inch water main was responsible.

The latest hole comes just weeks after Hardgate's sinkhole was finally repaired, reopening Kilbowie Road after five months of transport chaos for the town.

A spokesman for West Dunbartonshire Council said: “Scottish Water are in attendance at Dumbarton Road, with a traffic management system currently in operation. We are in continual dialogue with Scottish Water and will provide updates as soon as we can.”

A spokesman for Scottish Water said: "Scottish Water attended as quickly as possible yesterday to investigate and make safe the area on the affected stretch of Dumbarton Road by closing a lane on the road before it starts work today to repair the burst.

"When the repair has been completed, the utility will reinstate the affected part of road and re-open the lane as quickly as possible.

"Scottish Water apologises for any inconvenience to local residents and road users. The burst water main has not adversely affected normal water supplies in the area.

"Scottish Water had carried out separate work on its waste water infrastructure in the area several months ago but the cause of the burst water main is not linked to that waste water work."
