A COMMISION set up to examine college learning across Glasgow is calling for under-threat job centres to be protected.
Anniesland’s job centre is facing the axe and the College and Lifelong Learning Policy Commission noted the “vital role” it and others provide.
Their report states: “We would urge the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to reconsider its proposal to close eight of Glasgow’s 16 Job Centres.”
The commission also found that residents are deterred from further study because of costs and confusion around applying for funding.
It called Glasgow a “tale of two cities” with nearly half the workforce educated to degree level, “yet a high number of residents have no qualifications”.
Travel was found to be another major barrier to study.
And report writers also called for Glasgow Colleges’ Regional Board to review the consistency and levels of childcare support offered by Glasgow colleges.
A council spokeswoman said: “We will now continue to work with partners to take forward the recommendations.”
