SHE might have just celebrated turning 100 but this Drumchapel lady can give any teenager a run for their money when it comes to a party.

Helen Bradbury celebrated with a glass of bubbly, a slice of cake and a whirl on the karaoke machine with her large brood and masses of friends, who all descended on her west end care home for the occasion.

The sassy centenarian joked with her party guests that she’s finally reached “grown up” as “you’re only a girl until 90” and that the most famous person to send her a birthday card, Her Majesty the Queen, has nothing on her when it came to age given their decade-long gap.

One of Helen’s 11 great-grandchildren, Kevin Conroy, was in attendance for the event of a century and admitted his fun-loving nana can still surprise him.

The 30-year-old said: “She got up and sang a bit of karaoke which is something I’ve never seen her do before and she was the best of the day – better than my dad anyway.

“She always jokes with me and my sister that ‘you can’t fatten a thoroughbred’ and tells us we’re ‘lean’ because she likes to remind us that all of our good traits come from her.

“She’s good fun, has a great sense of humour and is very popular.”

At 29-years-old Helen was already a widow and working as an “inspectress” in a munitions factory when she met her husband, James, a plumber.

The couple married on January, 6, 1945 in St Peter’s Church in Partick and spent 61 years together before James passed away in 2006.

Nine years after the pair wed, they moved from Partick to Drumchapel, which has been home ever since, and Helen wasted no time in getting to know her community.

She began work as a dining attendant in the school meals service throughout the area and rose to become a school meals supervisor, which she was immensely proud of.

And when the busy mum-of-three, grandmother-of-eleven wasn’t working she was at her favourite spot, Drumchapel pub, The Good Year, and the birthday girl was so popular many of her friends from the pub attended her birthday bash at the beginning of the month.

Kevin added: “She’s great to be around – she’s a lot of fun and really family orientated.”

He continued: “She loves to write – reading and writing those are her passions – and I work abroad all the time so she writes me handwritten letters, which is lovely, it’s a really nice touch and you don’t get it a lot any more.

“She can always think of a way to make you smile.”
