A DRUMCHAPEL man has been locked up for six months for dangerous driving and possession of cocaine.

Gavin Stevenson, 39, of Tallant Road, Drumchapel, must also sit a competency test if he wants his licence back.

Stevenson appeared from custody at Dumbarton Sheriff Court last Thursday after admitting driving dangerously on the A82 near Milton, undertaking cars and driving at excessive speeds.

The offence happened on October 31 2015.

Stevenson also admitted being unfit to drive either through drink or drugs.

He also admitted cocaine possession at a petrol station on the same day.

Fiscal depute Scott Simpson told the court how the incident happened at 3.45pm.

Stevenson was seen driving in a dangerous manner and “swerving all over the road, performing dangerous undertaking manoeuvres and moving in front of vehicles.”

Mr Simpson continued: “One car had to perform an emergency stop. Two other witnesses saw him driving across the carriageway and police were contacted.”

The accused was traced to a petrol station.

Mr Simpson continued: “Police established that it was his vehicle. He was stopped and was staggering about. Police approached him and there was no smell of alcohol.”

The court was told officers searched the car and found cocaine. They also found another 10 wraps of cocaine worth £110 and £775.25 in cash.

Stevenson’s defence solicitor told the court that there had been a “five-year gap” in offending from his client from 2001 from 2016 because he was in a “stable relationship.”

The solicitor said: “He invested a great deal in that relationship but it came to an end through no fault of his own. That’s the context in which this happened.”

“He added: “We can be thankful there was no injuries and nothing damaged. He’s facing up to his responsibilities.”

Sheriff William Gallacher said: “I am concerned about the risk he poses to himself and to other people.”

Stevenson was jailed for six months, to run concurrently with a sentence he is currently serving. He was banned from driving for four years and must sit a competency test when that ban is lifted. He was also forced to forfeit the £775.25 found in his car to the Crown
