A CLYDEBANK teenager who caused a disturbance on a train and brandished a knuckle duster has been sentenced to a term of detention.

The 16-year-old from the Whitecrook area, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was on a train travelling between Westerton and Dumbarton rail stations on September 21 last year when he brandished the weapon, shouted, swore and made violent threats, causing fear and alarm to passengers.

Then after alighting the train he shouted, swore and ran away from police in Dumbarton High Street, before repeatedly attempting to punch an officer.

The teenager then struggled violently with six police officers as they attempted to arrest him in nearby Church Street and kicked one of them on the hand.

The youth, who appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court from custody, was also being sentenced for other offences, two of which took place in August last year, and breaching a curfew imposed as a condition of bail.

On August 22, he stole a quantity of alcohol from Marks and Spencers on Glasgow Road. He committed a similar offence at the same store six days later. He also breached the curfew imposed by the court ordering him to remain within his bail address between the hours of 7pm and 7am each night,  on September 19.

Defence solicitor Mr Kilpatrick told Sheriff William Gallacher that the teenager was currently serving a period of detention for another matter.

Sheriff Gallacher told the teenager: “I have to take account of the fact that you are now serving, what is for you, a lengthy sentence. On all of these matters I will impose a sentence of 73 days concurrent with each other but consecutive to the sentence you are already serving.”
