THE A82 westbound carriageway between the Kilbowie Roundabout and Mountblow Road has partially reopened.

The closure - caused by a 140ft tree near to the carriageway which has been damaged during today’s gale force winds and is at risk of falling - resulted in chaos on during rush hour on Monday evening and again on Tuesday morning.

The tree fell onto the road over night and is now being cleared by West Dunbartonshire Council teams.

It is hoped the carriageway will be fully reopened later today.

Drivers have been told to avoid the Clydebank area wherever possible or to expect significant delays.

The council took the decison to close the road with Police Scotland, and has apologised for the disruption.

A spokesman said: "We would like to reassure residents we are doing everything possible to resolve this matter quickly."

School transport in the Clydebank area ws also affected, with lengthy delays getting pupils to school.

Council bosses have advised parents take a personal view on whether to proceed with their usual arrangements or not.

Residents in the Oceanfield estate area will be escorted in groups from their slip road to the central reservation crossing point near the West Park Hotel where they can join the west-bound carriageway of the A82.

The spokesman added: "We would advise all residents to avoid journeys if at all possible, and to leave their vehicles in nearby locations on their return rather than attempt to return to the estate."

Police have also issued a warning to pedestrians to avoid the area surrounding the damaged tree. The immediate vicinity has been taped off and walkers are advised to respect this barrier and keep their distance.

Further updates will be published in the morning as new information becomes available.
