New Clydebank signing James Grant hopes penning a deal with his hometown club will end the 'years' of pestering from his lifelong Bankie uncle.

The 23-year-old is the nephew of former chairman Stevie McLaren and joins the Holm Park side after a spell with Broomhill in the Lowland League.

Grant - who becomes manager Gordon Moffat's third summer addition to 2023/24 playing squad after Callum Graham and Thomas Collins - can play right-back and will offer competition to regular starter Adam Hodge.

And the Duntocher lad admits 'Uncle Stevie' will be a happy man now he will be putting on the white and red strip next term.

He said: “I’ve had Stevie on my back for a few years now, so I’m sure he’ll be delighted to see that I’m finally here.

“I really enjoyed my time at Broomhill, even though the season didn’t pan out as well as we hoped. It was a good season for me personally where I played almost every game and it was good to have that experience of playing week in, week out.

“I want to get on the ball from the back and when I get the chance to go forward, hopefully I can get some crosses in the box.”

“I just want to try and get myself in the team, and once I do that to try and stay in. As a team, hopefully, we can look to try and build on what the club achieved last season and have another good one ahead.”

Boss Moff described his joy at getting Grant's signing over the line and admitted the addition 'rounds off' his squad.

He told the Post: “James is a lad we looked at a bit last year when he went to Open Goal and we’ve just kept an eye on things.

“Obviously a local guy and a guy who has an affiliation with the club as well.

“I’m delighted to have him in, and he fits the way we play.

“He’s good on the ball, he gets up and down and he’s a good defender.”

The manager is in the midst of a busy close season after he released six players including Josh Weir and Hamish McKinlay.

New deals have been offered to Nicky Low, Adam Smith and Connor Hamilton.

Moffat told club media at the time: “It’s always difficult when you lose guys from the club.

"You build relationships with these guys and it is sad to see some move on, but they’ve all been fantastic players for me and the club.”
