Drumchapel youngster Leo Church has made a sensational start to the year with two major boxing titles.

Leo, who was last year invited to train at Boxing Scotland’s High Performance Centre in Glasgow, picked up the 52kg Western Districts tournament at Firhill Complex at the beginning of February.

The 13-year-old carried that form and momentum into the Schoolboy Championships last weekend as he went on to win his second consecutive title in the 52kg weight category, outpointing a tough opponent from Aberdeen.

Next up, the young brawler, who represented Scotland at the Schoolboy Three Nations Championships in England last summer, turns his attention to the Great British Championships in June.

“I was training throughout the winter, so the hard work paid off,” Leo told Post Sport. “The two competitions fell perfectly in place with them being quite close together.

“I had two fights at the Western Districts, winning my semi-final with a decision.

“I then actually got a first round stoppage in the final to win the title which was ideal.

“The boy I was up against in the final was from Drumchapel too, but from a different gym so I didn’t know him too well.

“I then went straight into the final in the Schoolboy Championships after that and got another win. That was a tough fight that went the distance but I got the win there to make it two golds to start the year.

“I think I’ve got six or seven golds now so I’m going from strength to strength.

“The British Championships is in June so I’ll have a few club bouts now leading up to that. All my focus is on that now, so I’ll keep training and keep myself sharp.

“I fought down in Barnsley last year but it’s up in Scotland now so I’m looking forward to that.”

On the lookout for new sponsorship opportunities, Leo’s mum, Charlene, added: “We are on the eager for some sponsorship.

“With the British Championships coming up in June, there is a chance there to sponsor him at a major event. It’s all about making sure he gets the opportunities.

“If any local businesses would like to get in touch, my email is church.charlene@yahoo.co.uk.”
