Clydebank celebrated the opening of the redeveloped Holm Park pitch in style with an 8-1 win over fellow tenants Yoker Athletic on Saturday.

A healthy crowd watched on as Bankies kicked-off their pre season campaign with a nine goal thriller, including a hat-trick from trialist Aaron Millar and goals coming from former Yoker full-back Michael Bailey, Nicky Little, Jordan Shelvey, Cammy McClair and new signing Paul Byrne.

Clydebank boss Kieran McAnespie named a largely familiar starting XI for the Holm Park opener, with summer signings Jordan Kennedy and Paul Byrne featuring alongside trialists Millar, Bailey and Ryan Cowie.

After a fairly even start to proceedings, Bankies made the breakthrough 13 minutes in after Millar managed to walk his way through the heart of the Yoker defence and calmly pass the ball into the net for the first goal on the new surface.

Bankies doubled their advantage moments later through former Yoker right-back Bailey and, with half an hour on the clock, Clydebank effectively wrapped up the first win of the new era through summer signing Byrne, his driven effort fizzing past Ryan McLaren after a surging run.

Millar then added his second and Clydebank’s fourth from close range, before seeing another effort bounce of the post before the interval.

It was a frustrating afternoon for the Yoker management team who watched on as Garry Bissland, Jamie Waddell and Chris Molangou all picked up yellow cards.

Clydebank showed no signs of slowing down, however, and added number five and six within the opening five minutes of the second period.

First, last sesaon’s top scorer Little laid the ball on a plate for Millar to grab his hat trick, before Little himself added number six from the spot after Bailey was hauled to the ground.

A quintuple change soon killed the intensity of the game, but not before Bankies added two goals in two minutes to make it 8-0 with 12 minutes remaining. Shelvey - who looked the sharpest player on the pitch - grabbed the goal of the game when he fired high into the top corner from 25-yards out.

Then it was McClair’s turn to complete the scoring, stabbing the ball over the line from close-range after a well-timed run by trialist Anthony Higgins caught out a tired Yoker defence.

As the full-time whistle approached, Yoker grabbed a consolation through substitute George Thomson as Marc Waters had a rush of blood to the head and raced out of his goal, only for Thomson to take the ball round him and slot in from 20-yards

Following last night’s friendly with St Rochs, Bankies now welcome Broxburn Athletic to Holm Park this Saturday. Kick-off is 2pm.
