Yoker co-manager Peter McKenna was over the moon at the weekend as he bagged his first win as Whe Ho boss with a 2-1 win away to Royal Albert.

McKenna and fellow co-manager Tommy Montgomery took over at Holm Park earlier this month after Maurice George’s departure and the pair have already instilled a new sense of belief in a struggling Yoker side.

A hard-fought 1-1 draw with Shettleston in their first match was followed by a narrow loss at Greenock Juniors last weekend, but the signs of improvement have been there and it all came together on Saturday as they saw off an Albert side who sit three places above them in the table and who were unbeaten in their last eight matches.

Yoker were the better side from the off at the weekend as they looked to impress the new bosses.

And Gary Bissland opened the scoring with just 16 minutes on the clock as they took advantage of their early dominance.

Greg Cree added the second just after the half-hour mark to put the Whe Ho on their way as they secured their first win since November 17.

“I’m delighted with that. I’m not going to say it was comfortable but the boys deserved to win it,” McKenna told the Post. “We were absolutely dominant for 70 minutes, played some good football and got two good goals. The work rate and the things we’ve been working on in training were clear to see.

“We were the far better team overall. Albert even said in their match report that we were the better team by a mile. That’s the first game they’ve lost in their last eight so I could not be any happier.

“The Albert manager said we were the best team to go there this season apart from Clydebank back in November. That’s a massive compliment for us.

“We’re improving in every game now. We’re moving forward so we just need to keep it going now.”

Yoker are set to welcome Port Glasgow Juniors to Holm Park this weekend as they eye their first back-to-back wins of the season.

However, McKenna is under no illusions just how difficult taking on a Port side who currently sit fourth in the table and 18 points ahead of them will be, but is confident of another big performance from his side.

He added: “Port are a top team and sit up there for a reason so we know we need to be on it from the start.

“There was a buzz with the boys in training on Monday so we just need to take that and take our form into Saturday.

“It will be difficult on Saturday against them but we just need to look at how we played at the weekend and be confident of taking all three points.”

Kick-off at Holm Park on Saturday is 1.45pm.
