SCOTSTOUN triathlete Marc Austin has won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

He picked up Scotland’s first medal in the process after putting in a stunning performance in Australia.

The 24-year-old, a former World junior medallist, went out hard with the Brownlees four years ago at Strathclyde Park in the last Commonwealth Games, only to blow up due to the exertions and finish back in 22nd, behind two of his own team-mates, but there was none of that here.

With English flagbearer Alistair Brownlee a non-factor, he and Australia’s Jacob Birtwistle dropped Jonny Brownlee in the latter stages of the run, leaving Austin to fend off a late burst from another Aussie, Matthew Hauser for a remarkable bronze medal behind South Africa’s Henri Schoeman and second-placed Birtwistle.

The triathletes did Scotland proud on the opening morning here in the Gold Coast, with Beth Potter finishing a creditable 12th in the women’s race, three minutes behind Flora Duffy of Bermuda.
