Yoker Athletic manager Steven Reilly was left scratching his head after his side ended up on the wrong end of a 5-1 thumping Lesmahagow at Craighead Park on Saturday.

The Whe-Ho dominated the game and had over 30 shots during the game, and went 1-0 up after Gregor Cree’s effort deflected in after 21 minutes, with Greg Maitland also having a penalty saved.

Michael Brunton scored with a wonder strike to equalise for the Gow to make it level at the break.

But poor finishing and defending allowed the home side into the game, Stephen Higgins bagging his first of the afternoon on 54 minutes.

He got his second via a free-kick on 78 minutes to make it 3-1, before Maitland saw red for picking up a second booking.

Higgins completed his hat-trick minutes after, before Jordan Whitefield made it 5-1 to Lesmahagow.

Reilly said: “It’s one of the most freaky scorelines to be involved in to be honest with you, I have no idea how we never won that game.

“I can’t legislate for how we defended in the second half but in the first half alone, 5-1 would have been a fair result for us heading into the changing room.

“We missed a penalty and at 2-0 and it kills the game, instead they get a wonder goal and it’s the only strike they’ve had at goal.”

Yoker next host Blantyre Victoria, one of the other teams who were relegated to the Central First Division on Saturday at Holm Park.

Vics have picked up just two wins from their opening six fixtures, losing four.

And Reilly hopes his side begin to click soon.

He added: “Blantyre haven’t had a great start either, but after seeing our result they’ll be expecting to take something from us, but we know what we’re capable of. I’m still trying to find our best shape personnel wise, we were missing four guys again on Saturday.

“We still need to gel, we’ve been playing guys out of position and once we’ve got everybody fit we’ll come good I’m sure.

“We’ve played the best football from my time I’ve been here at Yoker against Forth, and it looks as if we’re going to kick on from there and then that freak result sets us back. It’s strange, and it’s up to me to get this rectified quickly.”
