A MEMBER of a Clydebank Karate Club has been called up to the Scotland squad for the World Championships next month in Tenerife.

Teenager Aria Pascual of Kokusai Karate Club, based in Clydebank will be competing for the national team in the upcoming competitions.

The 16-year-old will first compete at Meadowbank Centre in Edinburgh on September 30 in the British Championships, before heading to Germany to compete a week later.

Pascual will then compete for the national team in the female age 16/17 years category at the WKF World under 21 years Championships in Santa Cruz, Tenerife in October 25-29.

And she was delighted to get called up. Pascual said: “I have represented Scotland as part of the JKA national squad on several occasions but to be selected for the Scottish National Team is indeed amazing and a great honour for me.”

One big problem however for the youngster is funding. Karate is completely self-funded, and can make travelling to compete across the world at events difficult for her family.

She added: “At present karate is completely self-funded with my family having to fund the majority of the costs involved themselves.

“I would be extremely grateful if any local business would be interested in sponsoring me to help me to continue to compete in my sport at a high level to help me compete with the best of the best in the world of karate. Any support is very much appreciated and gratefully received.”
