It’s hard to believe that Christmas is almost upon us once again.

I always use my December column in the Post to thank our emergency service workers, and this year will be no different.

This year, though, the message is even more important – because these people have been the backbone of our communities as we have tried our best to navigate our way through this pandemic.

All of our key workers – from doctors, nurses, paramedics, police service, teacher and education staff, home carers and fire service to care home staff, armed forces, supermarket employees, waste collectors, delivery people and more – have worked harder than ever this year.

In the face of one of the most difficult years we have ever experienced, these people rose to the challenge.

They adapted to increased PPE requirements, they worked faster to cover for colleagues, they cared for our most vulnerable, they stood in the cold to manage long queues – and they did it all with a smile.

That hard work won’t stop during the festive period either so they are even more deserving of our sincere thanks and appreciation.

I am extremely proud of how we have responded to this virus together and shown true community spirit.

I know that for many, Christmas this year will be unrecognisable in comparison to previous years for some who have lost loved ones.

I know, too, that due to the government’s restrictions, some families can’t be together this Christmas.

Across the country, we would normally be in full celebration mode already – attending carol concerts, visiting Santa in his grotto, and spending time celebrating with colleagues, friends and loved ones.

But while these events might not be able to go ahead, we can still be together in other ways while adhering to the restrictions that have been put in place to keep everyone safe.

I’ve become quite adept at Zoom calls this year – I’m sure many of you have too – and it’s a perfect way to see loved ones on Christmas Day while still following the three-household bubble rule.

Merry Christmas everyone, and I hope your 2021 is healthy, happy and safe.
