We are now in full election mode following the inability of the UK Government to sort out the mess that they created over the Conservative Party’s desire to leave the European Union, something that I didn’t and don’t want.
I am supportive of a people’s vote to confirm, given all of the facts, if the wish of the UK electorate was still their wish.
I will continue to campaign to remain within the EU. Meantime, as the dark nights are now in I will be asking the constituents to vote for our local candidate, Jean Anne Mitchell, and the Labour Party to rid ourselves of this austerity-driven Tory Party.
My leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has already given details of the huge investment that he will bring when elected into Number 10 as the UK prime minister. He has already stated that Universal Credit (currently biting down hard on our constituents) will be abolished and will reverse the TV Licence charges being brought into for those over 75.
The Labour Party will also create a new taxation system that works for all, with those that earn the most paying their fair share rather than creating offshore accounts and absolving themselves of proper taxation.
Locally, the Labour Party and Jean Anne in particular will campaign on issues that the minority SNP administration are not addressing – the often mentioned lack of proper maintenance of our estates and our beautiful parks which are sadly being neglected; our deteriorating school buildings (in particular Edinbarnet Primary School in my own ward where fencing has been erected in the playground due to falling masonry); the proposed plans to ignore Linnvale residents that campaigned and objected to Strauss Avenue greenspace being considered as a future housing development - rejecting my colleague Councillor John Mooney’s call at full council only last week for an open consultation with Linnvale residents regarding the proposed use of this Greenspace (rejected by all SNP councillors and Bailie Denis Agnew).
So much for their 2017 manifesto commitments to be open, honest and transparent and to take the council in a new direction (certainly not up in my honest opinion).
Next week, I will be appearing before a planning appeal hearing to justify my reasons for supporting the rejection of the ASDA proposed fuel station in Linnvale which no doubt will be reported in due course by the Clydebank Post.
