Doors Open Day helped Heart of Scotstoun to open the doors to its past.

Each year I am proud of the annual Glasgow Doors Open Day, as this event swings open the doors to some truly amazing facilities with a rich history and purpose that helps to enrich our fine city.

This year, Heart of Scotstoun community centre decided to try something new, and June Mitchell approached with this idea of looking at the past history of the current site, which in the past was part of the Albion Motors.

This history presentation wasn’t just about the amazing world-leading company it was about the people who made it a company.

I myself posted on my social media about this exciting project and that anyone with a link to the site to contact the centre.

The next chapter of this story was very inspiring and people started tagging in friends and family, discussions took place on my page about the old football team and people started to reconnect by talking about their own experiences.

This was truly a strong connection with a company that not only shaped the transport world but also shaped our community.

A few weeks before the event I popped in to see the progress and I met lots of people in the cafe working on preserving this local history and I got to see some of the personal items people had held on to.

On Doors Open Day I was greeted by five large Albion Motors Trucks parked on the street, these excellent machines where open for all to see. We had listed lots of local people from the factory and where they lived locally at the time, and we had stories from the factory floor plus much more.

I am so thankful to all the volunteers and community members for creating what was such an unique but powerful community event.

I think it is appropriate here to recall the quote: “We have to know where we have been, to know where we are going”.
