ALMOST one quarter of Glasgow City Council refuse collectors have stated that they feel bullied or harassed at work.

Part of this is down to cuts, stricter working conditions and, as a result, the workers are put under more and more pressure.

This is down to the severe cuts this minority administration has administered to this department over the last couple of years: no wonder the sickness levels are still high.

At last week’s full council meeting, the Labour group put forward a motion asking the minority administration to ask the Scottish Government for more funds. The SNP put forward an amendment to the motion taking out the request for more funds and the Green Party backed them.

Furthermore, the City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction, Anna Richardson, was asked to apologise for people’s bins not being emptied and we are still waiting for this apology.

Under this SNP minority administration, bins are not being emptied on time and green spaces have not been cut on time or left uncut for weeks. People on the Assisted Garden Maintenance Scheme are complaining that their gardens are not being cut to schedule.

I have noticed the number of complaints increasing with regards to cleansing – the opposition party must also have noticed a high rise in complaints.

We cannot ask the workforce to provide the service we have had in this city while at the same time this SNP minority administration make brutal cuts to their budgets.

It is time this minority administration put Glasgow first, so they must start to stand up for Glasgow.

I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the state of the refuse collection service within our great city of Glasgow, which has gone from being one of the cleanest cities in the UK to one of the dirtiest.
