The use of food banks has risen drastically under the Tories.

Organisations running food banks often speak of supporting a range of people – such as families, pensioners and single people, many of whom are in low-paid work.

One such group, the Trussell Trust, revealed a 21 per cent increase in food parcels given out to children last summer.

Now food banks are bracing themselves for their busiest summer yet.

For many children, a school dinner is the most substantial meal of the day, and without it the summer holidays cause hardship to families.

This is known as “holiday hunger” and can have a serious impact on children’s development.

Scottish Labour has pledged to eradicate holiday hunger by rolling out programmes to tackle child poverty, following the success of Labour-run North Lanarkshire Council’s programme that provides free meals at weekends and holidays for primary pupils.

Of course, holiday hunger is part of child poverty, which has risen in the last decade due to Tory and SNP cuts, low-paid jobs and more and more welfare cuts.

School holidays should be a time of joy for children and their families.

The reality for many, sadly, is that it is a time of hunger and worry.

A cross party group on tackling Islamophobia is looking for people in Clydebank, as well as across Scotland, to write to them on their experiences of anti-Muslim hatred.

The group are looking to hear views about what steps should be taken to tackle the issue.

The group was set up in 2018 by Anas Sarwar MSP.

It has brought together elected members from all political parties, agencies and individuals interested in the issue of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred.

It explores and the nature and extent of Islamophobia in Scotland, and how it can be challenged and overcome.

Anas Sarwar and SNP MSP, Humza Yousaf, have both faced increasing racism and bigotry in recent years, and for standing against Islamophobia they were jointly awarded the Holyrood “Political Hero of the Year” award last month.

I would strongly encourage anyone of the Islamic faith, or anyone who wants to end such hatred, to make your voice heard.
