It’s now two years since the people of Glasgow voted for change but when you ask Glaswegians, the resounding question is “What change?”.

People are starting to remember the onions and garlic of Egypt, preferring the era dominated by the unaccountable labour administration to the current minority SNP administration. My response to every frustrated Glaswegian is that I am equally frustrated but we cannot return to the Labour era which is responsible for much of the current organisational culture at Glasgow City Council.

The labour council group have also been incredibly weak in defending the union and they are not efficient in holding the administration to account. The SNP only need to hold up their council record and you’d see them retreat with a whimper. The major difference between the SNP and Labour council group appears to be their seating arrangement in the council; you can watch full council meetings and I’ll leave you to be the judge.

Meanwhile, the Conservative council group is holding up well in defending the union. I cannot believe that the people of Scotland are constantly facing constitutional uncertainty having only recently voted in 2014’s independence referendum. The people of Scotland voted NO and it was meant to be a once-in-a lifetime vote.

At the last full council meeting before recess, the SNP motion which centred on independence was strongly rebuffed by the Conservative group. The SNP should focus on utilising the powers it has to make Scotland better instead of endless grandstanding on independence, and as we are local councillors, it was equally disappointing that council time was not used to discuss the bread and butter issues within our control.

The council should focus on improving bin uplift, education, performance of local businesses, citizen engagement and all other statutory services.
