What a year it has been so far for Drumchapel.

In February the city council announced the swimming pool was not being closed despite rumours to the contrary being circulated for political posturing by opponents in the City Chambers.

Now, as we move to the second half of the year, I can tell you that good news stories in Drumchapel are like buses: you wait for ages and then four come along together – so let me tell you about them.

Firstly, Cernach Housing have been given the green light to build 48 houses in Invercanny Drive for social renting accommodation.

Secondly, the land on Kinfauns Drive the site of the former Drumry House is to be disposed of through Glasgow’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme (AHSP) and will go to registered social landlords, ie, housing associations, for a mixture of affordable and social renting.

Thirdly, as part of the regeneration of the shopping centre area we will see the creation of a new community hub. This will bring a number of benefits to the area by various housing services under one roof – something I have been campaigning for since 2012.

The council will not be telling people what will go in the hub as this will be decided with residents through public consultation – so keep your eyes and ears open for dates.

Fourthly, on Wednesday, June 12, the chest, heart and stroke hub in the shopping centre started a health programme called No Life Half Lived where you can drop in and have a free health check along with advice on a healthy lifestyle.

In other parts of the ward we have seen the opening of the long-awaited new primary school in Blairdardie – and what a fantastic new building it is.

On other matters, the bin replacement scheme has turned out well despite some initial hiccups. Finally, the Netherton community centre refurb is going well and on track to be completed on time.
