In February 2017 my Labour-run council in West Dunbartonshire announced that money would be set aside to build a new sports pavilion and changing facilities in Duntocher.

The sum of £300,000 was set aside to build this facility at the Fore Park and William Street football pitches.

This money was ring-fenced by the Labour Party which means that it can’t be allocated to anything else.

Since the SNP took control in West Dunbartonshire in May 2017 a number of essential building programmes have stalled, including the work to build a new sports pavilion for Duntocher and Hardgate.

Two years have gone by and not one brick has been laid and not a single penny has been spent – and planning permission has not even been obtained.

I raised this issue at council in March of this year. Sadly, no one representing the SNP could enlighten the public as to when we can expect this work to begin. It again highlights the complete lack of leadership by the SNP councillors.

Thereafter, council officials stepped in and indicated we could expect this project to start in April 2019, however – surprise, surprise – still nothing. Over two years of inaction and the SNP don’t seem to care, and respond either with blank looks or shrugs of their shoulders.

It is the community of Duntocher and Hardgate which suffers as a result of their ineptitude.

Local sports teams have contacted me to complain about the utterly appalling conditions experienced at the make-shift changing facilities. It is a disgrace that our local teams should have to endure this.

It simply is not good enough; the money is there to be spent, so I urge the council to get on with it. Prioritise this project even if the SNP councillors won’t – and build the sports pavilion which Duntocher and Hardgate deserves.

This issue serves to highlight the bigger picture at our council and councils up and down the land. The SNP are not interested in getting on with the day job, they are too busy running around waving flags or cheering on Nicola Sturgeon and her obsession with Indyref2.

Meanwhile, public services crumble, the economy fails and child poverty soars and West Dunbartonshire and Scotland suffers as a result.
