Brexit has been on everyone’s lips over the last couple of years, and particularly in the last three weeks as Parliament has failed to come to an agreement as to how to progress.

However, although Brexit is very important, I would like to focus on the events that have been happening around my own ward.

Blairdardie Parent Council came up with a fantastic idea to offer free fruit to schoolchildren before 9am.

This has been deemed a major success and, on the back of this, Knightswood Primary applied and has now received funding, and other primary schools within my ward are now putting in funding bids to roll out this great initiative.

This will mean children will be able to access free fruit prior to 9am in the morning which will be one of their five-a-day fruit or veg.

I am very much hoping that Glasgow City Council will look upon this initiative and decide to roll this out to every primary.

Although there is fruit in primary schools, children cannot access it until lunchtime, therefore if the minority administration is serious about tackling not just holiday hunger but making sure that no child starts the school day without having something to eat, then they should seriously look at this initiative that has come from Blairdardie Primary.

Also I would like to make your readers aware that a number of years ago I came up with an idea for an apprenticeship scheme with Strathclyde Fire and Rescue.

Thousands of young people applied for it and those who were successful went on to employment with what is now Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Unfortunately, the money ran out – but I am delighted to hear the Service has started the apprenticeship scheme again.

It was a fantastic success back then and I am quite sure it is going to be a fantastic success again.

I would like to wish readers a happy summer and hopefully the weather will be kind to us.
