Castles in Scotland named among most enchanting ruins in UK

The interesting list was pulled together by experts who "scoured the country to uncover the most enchanting destinations" and featured sites in the east and west of Scotland.

The experts also shared information on the nearby hotels available for those visiting as well as hidden features people can keep their eyes out for.

Two castles in Scotland were named among the UK's most "romantic ruins" for those looking for an "enchanting getaway".

Kilchurn Castle in Argyll and Bute and Lochleven Castle in Perth and Kinross were the ruins named on the list with the official BBC Countryfile website lauding them for their "splendid blend of history and natural beauty".

Discussing Kilchurn Castle, the experts said the spot, "cradled by mountains on the shores of Loch Awe, offers a splendid blend of history and natural beauty."

It added: "Stroll through its ancient tower, surrounded by Scotland's longest freshwater loch, and discover the romantic lore of the 1st Earl of Breadalbane and Countess Mary Campbell."

The experts also recommended the Tower of Glenstrae as a place to stay, and told visitors to keep an eye out for the lintel dated 1693 bearing the initials of the 1st Earl of Breadalbane and Countess Mary Campbell.

Lochleven Castle was also said to be "a tiny island sanctuary" offering "whispers [of] the tale of Mary, Queen of Scots' daring escape" across Loch Leven.

The Old Schoolhouse in Kinross was dubbed a great romantic retreat with the experts telling visitors to come between May and September (when the castle is open).

For those visiting in February or March, the experts recommend that they "sit on the banks of Loch Leven - the largest natural shallow water body in lowland Britain - and watch the tufted duck and teal as they dabble for food, or huge flocks of wintering wildfowl."
