Schools are out for summer, and it’s time for families to get out and about and to enjoy good days together.
I know that the cost of summer activities can be very high.
That’s why I have welcomed the UK Government’s ‘Great British Summer Saving Scheme.’
From June 25 until September 1, the government has cut VAT on children’s meals and from tickets to cinemas, concerts, soft play, and so much more.
Helping to bring down costs and make it easier and cheaper for families to make the most of every moment this summer.
We are fortunate in Glasgow West to have great local organisations like the G15 Youth Project, Drumchapel United FC, Linkes, PEEK, and the DRC Youth Project, which offer programmes of activity for young people to enjoy.
Glasgow City Council’s Holiday Programme also includes local activities and can be found at: https://bit.ly/4vuc6DX.
Let’s hope the good weather continues.
Drumchapel United FC, one of Glasgow West’s great local football clubs, celebrated its 25th anniversary in June.
This is a significant milestone, and it’s good to look back and see how much the club has achieved.
I tabled a motion in Parliament recognising their achievements and was able to present it to the club at their anniversary fun day.
The club has recently been granted a 25-year lease on the Donald Dewar pitches, which will allow them to progress with their development plans, including a community hub.
The government has announced plans for a landmark overhaul of online safety rules, which is designed to provide children with more protection from harmful and addictive online content.
Earlier this year, I launched a survey on the issue to get the views of people in Glasgow West.
The overwhelming majority of respondents wanted to see a minimum age for access to social media.
I am pleased, therefore, that the government has confirmed it plans to ban access for children under sixteen to platforms where users create, share, and interact with content, including TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, X, and Facebook.
A range of additional protections will also be introduced.
I believe these measures represent the most significant reforms of online child protection in recent years and will help to create a safer digital environment for children and young people while preserving the ability of adults to access online services.
The Bearsden Road/Temple Road junction has concerned me for many years.
Together with my colleague, Cllr Paul Carey, we campaigned on the issue, calling for action to provide better traffic management at this location.
Over the years, the junction has got busier and can be really challenging for drivers and pedestrians.
Local residents highlighted their concerns through my Local Transport Survey.
I was delighted, therefore, to be informed at the end of June that the council has now earmarked the junction for the installation of traffic lights, and a detailed design is being developed.
