What a summer of sport we’ve been having, from annual fixtures like Wimbledon delivered as they normally do, and The Open likely will as well. The World Cup was incredible, whilst Scotland didn’t progress as far as we wanted to, just being back at the World Cup for the first time in 28 years is testament to the great work of the entire team and departing manager, Steve Clarke.
Now Glasgow, and more specifically Scotstoun, take centre stage as the Commonwealth Games begin.
Much has been said about what to expect from this slimmed down iteration of the Games. It wasn’t meant to be here. It was originally set for Australia, but when they no longer could stage them, Glasgow stepped up and saved the Games from potentially being wiped out for good.
Expectations have to be managed, anyone measuring these Games against the incredible experience that was Glasgow 2014 is likely to be disappointed. The more modest 2026 Games reflects the fact that no Glasgow City Council funding is going towards the games. At a time when budgets are tight, it’s right we protect essential services rather than diverting funds elsewhere. Despite these caveats, there is much to look forward to from Glasgow 2026.
Several venues across Glasgow will host the games, but Scotstoun Stadium will take centre stage as the home of Athletics for the Games. Some of the best athletes from across the nations of the Commonwealth will go for Gold in the stadium that normally houses our wonderful Glasgow Warriors Rugby team. As well as top international stars, we will also have some excellent homegrown Scottish stars in action such as Laura Muir and Eilish McColgan. Unlike in other competitions, such as the Olympics, Scottish athletes will compete as Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.
What better way to bring the curtain down on an incredible summer of sport than by cheering on Team Scotland at Glasgow 2026!
