As the school holidays approach, West Dunbartonshire is preparing to welcome the season with a packed programme of activities designed to support families, inspire young people, and bring communities together.
At the heart of this effort is the Council's popular five-week Summer SHINE Programme, returning once again in partnership with local organisations.
Over the coming weeks, SHINE will offer a wide range of engaging opportunities for young people, from creative sessions to outdoor adventures — ensuring there are accessible options for families right across the area.
Funded through the Council's cost-of-living support, the programme continues to play an important role in helping households enjoy enriching experiences during the holidays without added financial pressure.
West Dunbartonshire Leisure Trust (WDLT) will also deliver a programme of free and low-cost summer activities.
As in previous years, all West Dunbartonshire school pupils can access free swimming between 11am and 3pm, with pupils aged from 12 to 18 able to attend free gym sessions between 12pm and 4pm each day.
This is the fourth year the popular initiative will run, with increasing numbers of young people attending each year.
This year, the Council has also secured additional funding for a Summer of Sport initiative, designed to widen participation and encourage more residents to get active.
With Glasgow hosting the Commonwealth Games and Scotland playing in the World Cup, this initiative taps into the excitement of world-class competition to inspire local involvement and community pride.
And what a summer of sport it promises to be.
From cheering on homegrown talent in international football to the drama of Wimbledon, the Tour de France, Formula 1, the European Athletics Championships, and the US Open in golf, there will be no shortage of inspiration.
Closer to home, the Scottish Pipe Band Championships returning to Levengrove Park on Saturday, July 25, will once again be a highlight of the local calendar, attracting visitors and showcasing Dumbarton on a national stage.
Taken together, these events and programmes create a vibrant picture of what West Dunbartonshire has to offer this summer.
Whether you’re cheering on your favourite team, taking part in organised sport, enjoying an event at one of our libraries, or spending time with family at a local event, there really is something for everyone.
Keep an eye on the Council website and social media channels for information about the programmes on offer.
All that’s left now is for the weather to play its part!
Here’s wishing all our residents a safe, happy and memorable summer.
