Two West Dunbartonshire Council home-building projects for older residents have been recognised at a national awards ceremony.

Willox Park in Dumbarton and Mount Pleasant in Old Kilpatrick were highlighted at the recent Homes for Scotland Awards in the Small Affordable Development of the Year category.

Willox Park took home the top prize, while Mount Pleasant received a special commendation.

Councillor Gurpreet Singh Johal, convener of housing and communities, said: "Having seen these two sites from when work began until they were fully completed and welcoming tenants has been fascinating.

"It is an absolute joy to hear that both have been recognised at a national awards ceremony with the Willox Park development ultimately being named the winner in the affordable development category for small developments.

"This is testament to the hard work of Council officers and our partners including the contractors on both sites for seeing these visions become a reality."

Both developments are designed for older residents.

Willox Park replaced previous homes that were earmakred for demoltion with modern, energy-efficient homes.

The judging panel praised the project for its "customer care, community impact, design quality, innovation and teamwork".

They also highlighted the strength of community engagement, driven by Council officers in collaboration with tenants and progressed by the contractors on site throughout the completion of the works.

One long-term resident, Billy Leyden, 80, who has lived on the site for 30 years, described his new home as a "dream come true."

The Mount Pleasant scheme transformed a former care home site into a small residential community in less than a year, with tenants moving in last summer.

It includes 19 homes equipped with low carbon electric heating and hot water systems, and received a commendation at the awards.

Councillor Hazel Sorrell, vice convener of housing and communities, said: “I am incredibly proud of officers in our housing service who have contributed significantly to this award win and commendation.

"These developments are changing the lives of older people in our communities for the better and this recognition is thoroughly deserved."

Both Willox Park and Mount Pleasant were funded through the council’s Housing Investment Programme, with support from the Scottish Government’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme.
