A major housing developer is set to takeover a site at the flagship Queens Quay development in a "huge moment" for Clydebank as they plan to build 230 homes.

Barratt Homes has secured a portion of the land within what has been dubbed one of the 'most significant regeneration projects' in Scotland, as they propose to build a mix of homes and flats.

The development had been split into three sites in order to sell the land to different developers to fulfil the masterplan of creating a space mixed with public and private housing.

At an update presented to councillors of West Dunbartonshire's Infrastructure, Regeneration & Economic Development (IRED) Committee, officers were pleased to pass on the good news.

It is understood the sale of the westernmost site is set to go ahead pending the approval of planning permission for the 230 homes.

Councillor William Rooney, said: “With regards to Queens Quay, I saw in the report that the missives are being concluded for one site with a further site expected in quarter one of 26/27.

"Could you expand on that if that's possible, please?”

Alan Douglas, Chief Officer for Regulatory & Regeneration, said: “I've been promising this for a long time and saying good things are happening and not delivering, so I'm very pleased to be able to talk about something good that is actually happening.

“The missives [on site one] have been concluded and they are subject to planning going through. The sale will then proceed that's the only real conditionality within the offer.

“That will deliver 230 new build private homes."

Despite the positive update, Mr Douglas reflected on their disappointment over the variety of housing that is set to be created.

It was hoped that more flat or apartment blocks would constitute part of the plan.

Mr Douglas continued: "The proposal that Barratt have come forward with recognises the masterplan constraints and designs but we'd envisaged far higher levels of flatted development.

“The good news is they are building some flats there, which will help prove the market whether there is or is not a market for flats. We've maintained [that] we believe there is, when we look to Dumbarton we see flats still being built, but we've always been told that the major house builders won't entertain it.

“Overall, it's good news in terms of numbers of houses, revenue for the council, and return of capital that's there.

“I’m very happy to at last be able to say, yes, something has happened and not just watch this space.”

Councillor William Rooney added: “It's a huge moment for Queens Quay site. It's great to see Barratt Homes are very keen to invest in Clydebank and it's great to hear the master plan has been respected. So I'm really excited to see how this is going to go ahead.”
