Douglas McAllister MP has backed calls for greater investment in cancer research.

The MP for West Dunbartonshire showed his support at a Cancer Research UK event held at Westminster marking World Cancer Day.

Observed annually on February 4, World Cancer Day is a global initiative that aims to raise awareness and drive progress in cancer care.

“It affects every family in every constituency and I see the devastating impact of the disease week in, week out in West Dunbartonshire.

“Cancer Research UK’s work shows how, right now, UK researchers are driving scientific breakthroughs that could change how we prevent, diagnose and treat cancer – bringing hope to thousands.”

The MP met with Cancer Research UK campaigners who emphasised the urgency of accelerating research, as cancer cases continue to rise across the UK and Scotland.

He said: “Nearly one in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

“More than 7400 people were diagnosed with cancer last year across Greater Glasgow and Clyde alone.

“There’s so much more to do.

“That’s why we must continue to support and invest in UK innovation to save more lives.

“Research makes more precious moments possible for people affected by cancer and their loved ones.”

In the past 50 years, its work has contributed to doubling cancer survival rates in the UK.

Shaun Walsh, head of public affairs and campaigning at Cancer Research UK, said:

“We’re grateful to Douglas McAllister MP for championing our work.

“With new technologies opening doors to new discoveries, we’re living in a golden age of cancer research with the UK as a global leader.

“But we cannot afford to stand still.

“Over the year ahead, we look forward to working with politicians from across the spectrum to ensure that we have the right environment in the UK to be able to seize the opportunity to fuel faster progress.

“We want to bring about a world where everybody lives longer, better lives free from the fear of cancer – no matter who they are or where they’re from.”
