An application seeking to demolish a category B-listed building has been submitted to West Dunbartonshire Council.

The former exciseman’s house in Bowling has lain vacant for three decades after historically being a central part of the old Littlemill Distillery.

The late 18th century house was originally constructed to provide accommodation for Excise officers whose role was to ensure the proper taxes and duties were paid at the brewery.

Having undergone a degree of alteration and extension in the 19th century the home was used up until the distillery ceased production in 1994.

Now, the building remains in a state of significant damage which was exacerbated by a fire in 2004 which destroyed the home's roof.

A report provided in June 2021 called the building 'beyond economic repair, dangerous and should be demolished'.

An application to demolish the building was submitted and approved in 2022, however the work was never carried out.

In December last year, another application was received asking to renew the approval of demolition allowing the planning permission to remain valid.

However, an officer for the West of Scotland Archaeology Service has written to West Dunbartonshire Council's planning department asking to consider the application with care.

The service says they understand the need to flatten the house due to its state, but due to the historical importance of the building, the service is petitioning the department to undertake a survey.

The detailed document, the service says, would ensure an accurate record of its existence prior to demolition.

In order for this to be completed, they are asking for the condition to be a clause in the approval of the application.

Their letter reads: "I recommend that a detailed survey should be made of the structure prior to its demolition, to ensure that an adequate record of it exists.

"Copies of the resultant survey shall be deposited in the National Monuments Record for Scotland and in the local Sites and Monuments Record upon completion."

The application and conditions are due to be considered by West Dunbartonshire Council's planning department.
